A few words about Gould's Book of Fish.This novel began many years ago when I was shown an exquisite book of twenty-six paintings of fish, made by the convict forger William Buelow Gould in 1828, while serving time in the notorious penal colony of Sarah Island, the Devil's Island of the British Empire. He had been ordered to paint the fish there for the settlement's surgeon, a natural history collector.

I didn't want the book to be a conventional historical novel. At it's heart Goulds Book of Fish id a love story about a poor white convict and a black woman,and as such it is a novel that speaks to the heart of contempory Australia.

Billy Gould is waiting in his cell to be executed, writing a book about the fish he paints. each chapter begins with the image of a fish- a seahorse, a cowfish, a sawtooth shark- in whose eyes Billy Gould at first sees those trapped in the penal colony with him...continue
