Research Interests
Although my current research effort is focused on patterns in lifetime reproduction of Peregrine Falcons, I am interested in almost anything concerned with birds of prey, both diurnal and nocturnal. Nevertheless, the evolution of sexual dimorphism and sex allocation hold particular fascination. I belong to a small group studying semi-urban Nankeen Kestrels. Conservation biology is also a strong interest, which I indulge by my involvement in a long-term program to re-establish a population of owls on Norfolk Island, from the one individual female Norfolk Island Boobook that remained in 1986.

Raptors make challenging subjects and their study often requires long-term commitment. However, I believe they offer several advantages to the student of evolutionary ecology. For example, they exhibit a range of interspecific variation in the degree of sexual size dimorphism, which is reversed, and there is a clear division of duties between the sexes. Moreover, many Australian species, of significance because they are unusual, common or rare, are relatively unstudied.
